Attribute-level lineage

Attribute-level lineage traces an individual attribute — with the transformation rules applied to it — from a dashboard number back to its physical source column.

Definition

Attribute-level lineage records the path of an individual attribute, together with the business meaning and transformation rules applied at each hop, from the number on a dashboard back to the physical column it originated in. It is a level finer than column-level lineage, which records only which field fed which field.

Why it matters

  • Provenance answers "where did this come from"; attribute-level lineage also answers "why is it this value".
  • Impact analysis depends on it: knowing what breaks downstream if a rule or source changes.
  • It is the difference between asserting a figure is correct and being able to demonstrate it to an auditor.
