Data lineage

Data lineage is the recorded path data takes from origin to use. It exists at table, column and attribute level, and only the finest level explains a number.

Data lineage is the recorded path data takes from its origin, through every transformation, to the place it is used. It exists at three levels of granularity — table, column and attribute — and the finer the level, the more of the "why" it can explain.

Why it matters

  • Regulatory reporting frequently requires demonstrable provenance, not just correct totals.
  • Root-cause analysis after a bad number is guesswork without it.
  • AI-produced answers need provenance for exactly the same reason human-produced ones do.
